Public feedback needed for new animal bylaws

New animal control rules and regulations in need of public comments.

The City of Salmon Arm is asking for public feedback on proposed changes to their animal control rules dated back to 1995.

The updated bylaw (No. 4728) is under first reading as of July 28 and is currently being reviewed before continued discussion by council this fall.

The draft of the updated bylaw includes regulations changes on chicken and rabbit numbers, dog licensing, urban beekeeping, pigeon feeding and wildlife.

According to the draft, some of the regulations include:

  • People who wish to own chickens or rabbits must have a yard. The amount of chickens and rabbits or beehives one possesses depends on the size of their yard and property.
  • For dogs, “no owner shall cause or permit his or her dog to be tied, secured, tethered or fastened to a tethering system in excess of four consecutive hours in a 24-hour period.”
  • Feeding wildlife is not permitted, though a person can install bird feeders but for the intent of only attracting birds.
  • The maximum number of pigeons allowed on any property shall be 30.

These are summaries of only a few rules and regulations. Residents can also read the full, detailed bylaw on the City of Salmon Arm website or Facebook page.

The public can send their comments to [email protected].
