Porcupine Valley prepares for prescribe fire

The Porcupine Valley fire unit is preparing for a prescribed fire in the Porcupine Valley of Yoho National Park, northwest of the Trans-Canada Highway, and approximately 17km southwest of Field.

If weather conditions are met, 3,300 hectares could burn forests in the area to help reduce fire fuels and intensity in the event of a wildfire. The prescribed fire will strengthen grizzly bear habitats, as well as restore habitat for whitebark pine.

The public can expect to see flames, smoke, firefighting equipment and crew during operations. Areas in the Porcupine Valley have already seen closures.

The entire Porcupine Valley from the entrance at the Trans-Canada Highway to Mount King, including the Mount Hunter Trail and the Finn Creek Day- Use Area are closed until further notice.

Yoho National Park put out the closure warning on Aug. 26. Violators may be charged under the Canada National Parks Act, with a maximum penalty of $25,000.
