Speed checks and patrols as schools welcome back students

As the new school year begins, Salmon Arm RCMP want to ensure all drivers follow the 30km/h speed limit in school and playground zones.

RCMP will be doing patrols and speed checks as the school year kicks off. In Salmon Arm, school zone speed is 30km/h from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Pedestrians are also reminded to use designated sidewalks and follow crossing signals where available. They also advise people to make eye contact with drivers, as there can be no assumption a driver will stop.

RCMP suggests drivers make time to get to school, as drop off and pick up times can be busy and cause congestion. Be alert at all times, as children can jump out on the road unexpectedly.

When there is a bus stopped with its red lights flashing, drivers cannot pass as passing it is illegal. Failure to stop for a school bus signal can result in a $368 fine.
