New water well design underway in Golden

Well 7, designed for Golden, will be built at Dogwood Park with construction planned for Spring 2026. The location of the well was selected after studies, meetings with Interior Health Authority (IHA) and other experts.

The Town of Golden provided an update about the well, saying they have been working since 2023 to secure a new drinking water well to meet the town’s needs for the next 20 years.

Initial testing confirmed that Well 7 showed strong potential for water quality and quantity, though further testing showed that the source was classified as ‘Groundwater At Risk of Containing Pathogens” (GARP). GARP does not mean the water is unsafe; it means that the source requires treatment. This will prevent possible bacteria, protozoa and viruses from infecting the water.

The Town is proposing a dual barrier disinfection system for the well. This will include Ultraviolet (UV) disinfection, and chlorination. The Town said they are going to make their best efforts to have the lowest possible chlorine dose used, “balancing safety with water quality preferences.”

They recommend residents who are concerned with tasking or smelling chlorine in their water suggest leaving an open jug if water overnight un the fridge, or use a Brita-style carbon filter pitcher or install a carbon filter on taps.

People can attend their council meeting where a report on water chlorination will be presented on Sept. 16 and 1:15 p.m.
