The District of Sicamous is reminding the public about rail safety this week, alongside Operations Lifesaver Inc. and CPKC to ensure people are practicing safe behaviours when it comes to train tracks.
Train safety awareness is spreading across the province this week. Every September, CN works with communities to promote Rail Safety Week, and inform the public about the dangers and risks involved with trespassing.
According to the data provided the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, British Columbia had 17 crossing accidents, 23 trespasser accidents in 2024. The BC Coroners Service has seen 40 accidental railway deaths between 2020 and 2025, with four of those deaths reported this year.
To remain safe and to prevent rail tragedies, they are reminding those to never walk or take photos along train tracks, to cross tracks only at designated locations, to always look for signals, to wait for trains to pass completely and to never attempt to beat the train.
The District of Sicamous is prompting people to follow along with CPKC and Operations Lifesaver Inc, to learn more about train track incidents.
