CSRD encouraging septic maintenance through rebate program

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District has recently introduced a septic system rebate program to Electoral Area E and Seymour Arm to try an encourage homeowners and property owners to maintain their septic systems.

The CSRD said many properties within their four Liquid Waste Management Plan (LWMP) service areas are on septic. This means, owners do carry the responsibility for regular maintenance and repairs for their systems.

The SepticSmart rebate program is designed to help alleviate and offset partial costs associated with the septic maintenance. Specifically, the CSRD will cover 75 per cent of eligible expenses for certain services, subject to a maximum amount.

The CSRD said rebate funds property owners can apply for are:

  • up to $400 to install risers (a portal for ease of access to the septic tank)
  • up to $500 to install or replace distribution boxes (a centralized box within septic field that equally distributes wastewater into connecting pipes)
  • up to $300 to conduct a complete system inspection by an accredited Registered Onsite Wastewater Professional (ROWP)
  • up to $200 to install an effluent filter.

Non-eligible maintenance activities include septic pump-outs. The CSRD is reminding people interested in applying that approval is a must and “after the fact” applications will not qualify.
