The Mount Hunter Trail is now open to the public after being closed during the Porcupine Valley Prescribed Fire in Yoho National Park. Parks Canada said that while conditions are safe, there are still hot spots within the ignition area.
There is still an area closure for the Porcupine Valley, and the closure will remain in effect until snowfall. Though the area is closed, Parks Canada said it won’t affect trails, roads and facilities.
Some smoke can still be visible, and fire specialists will monitor the prescribed area and complete “mop up work”.
Fire crews prepared for the prescribed fire in late August, with the entrance to the Trans-Canada Highway to Mount King, including the Mount Hunter trail and the Finn Creek Day-Use area being closed.
The fire was planned to be 3,300 hectares in size. The blaze was meant to help reduce fire fuels and intensity in the event of future wildfires, while strengthening grizzly bear habitats.
The Porcupine Valley will remain closed for the safety of the public during the last few stages of the prescribed fire operations. Violators could be fined up to $25,000.
Yoho National Park said their won’t be anymore updates for this fire.
