Splatsin show homes ceremony marks milestone in community housing

The Splatsin Development Corporation (SDC) held a groundbreaking ceremony this week for the Splatsin Homes show home in Enderby, marking a major milestone in climate-resilient and energy-efficient housing.

The SDC said the show home aims to provide opportunities for the public to learn more about concept drawings, sample materials and layouts that make these future home eco-friendly.

The launch welcomed Splatsin leadership, Elders, community members and project partners, and was led by Splatsin Elder Randy William, who acknowledged the significant of the land, the project and unification of the community.

Traditional dances, performed by Julian Alexander, Bart Thomas and Helen Duteau also took place to bless the site.

Graham Go, CEO of the SDC said the show home represents more than a building.

“It demonstrates what is possible when Indigenous-led development is rooted in quality, sustainability, and long-term community benefit. Splatsin Homes is about building homes that people can be proud of, today and for generations to come,” Go said.

Kukpi7 (Chief) Mike Christian highlighted the long-term vision and importance behind the project.

“This is about creating opportunities for our people and planning responsibly for the future,” Christian said. “Splatsin Homes reflects our values, taking care of the land, supporting our members, and building in a way that strengthens our community for generations to come.”

The Shuswap MP Mel Arnold, RDNO Vice Chair Allysa Hopkins, Lawrence Lee, Enderby Mayor Huck Galbraith, Go and Christian turned the shovels for the official ceremonial groundbreaking.

“The show home will play a key role in demonstrating how Indigenous-owned housing initiatives can deliver high-quality outcomes while supporting economic development and long-term community resilience,” the SDC stated in their release.

They added that these Splatsin homes represent an innovative, Indigenous-led approach to housing that blends sustainability and community-focused development through modern design.
