Salmon Arm crosswalk to receive improvements

Safety improvements are planned for a Salmon Arm crosswalk at the 5 Avenue 50+ Activity Centre to enhance pedestrian visibility and access.

The City of Salmon Arm’s manager of engineering directed staff to prepare safety outlines for the crosswalk at 5 Avenue SE and 1 Street SE. A report said the crosswalk lines are faded and require annual painting.

“To enhance visibility and durability of the lines, paint markings will be upgraded to thermoplastic markings in 2026,” the report said. The cost increase for thermoplastic markings compared with paint is approximately $1,500.

The report also said vehicles parked near the crosswalk can obscure pedestrians, creating a hazard. As a result, two parking spaces on the south side of the street will be removed and marked as no parking. The cost for this work is estimated at about $1,500.

Installation of a digital speed monitoring system would capture traffic volumes and speeds from 5 Street or Shuswap Street. According to the report, the cost of installing the sign can be accommodated within the current roads operating budget.

In an announcement, the city said “these measures can be implemented using existing resources and will help improve safety now while informing potential future upgrades.”

Work is scheduled for this spring and will include removing nearby parking spaces, adding no-parking curb markings, and installing flexible delineator posts and speed monitoring signage.
