Breaking: Water Quality Advisory issued for Sunnybrae water system

An advisory has been issued in consultation with Interior Health for the Sunnybrae water system due to cloudiness caused by recent rain and increased stream flow.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District said high turbidity levels may occur in surface water sources due to seasonal weather changes, causing excessive surface runoff, flooding or lake turnover.

“A high turbidity level may reduce the effectiveness of the water disinfection treatment system. If disinfection is impaired, disease-causing bacteria may escape into the water distribution system, resulting in an increased risk of intestinal illness,” the CSRD said in its alert.

The CSRD said turbidity in the Sunnybrae water system has not reached the level required for a boil-water notice, but the advisory is in place as a precaution.

People with weakened immune systems and those seeking additional protection should take precautions when drinking water, washing fruits and vegetables, making beverages or ice, or brushing their teeth.

Until further notice, these users are advised to:

  • Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute
  • Use an alternate, safe source of water

The CSRD said it will update users once the water quality advisory has been lifted.
