Fire department reminding residents to FireSmart their homes

The Salmon Arm Fire Department is reminding residents to “FireSmart” their homes ahead of summer.

In a social media post, the department suggested cleaning combustible debris out of gutters and removing low tree limbs to prevent a ground fire from turning into a crown fire.

On the FireSmart BC website, residents are advised to check underneath decks and clear away leaves and debris, keep grass and weeds below 10 cm and keep roofs clean.

The FireSmart BC program is a provincial initiative aimed at reducing the risk of wildfire damage to homes, communities and forests.

“Everyone’s actions count. Whether you’re a homeowner, renter, or community leader, following FireSmart principles helps build a wildfire-resilient British Columbia,” the FireSmart website said.

For more information, residents can visits the FireSmartBC website.
