Salmon Arm city councillor shares recent health challenge

City of Salmon Arm Coun. Kevin Flynn has made the community aware of a possible cancer diagnosis but said he will continue serving the city.

At the city’s April 27 meeting, Flynn made the announcement, saying he believes in being honest and transparent. He described the discovery of tumours on his liver, pancreas and lungs.

“After suffering really severe stomach pain at last Monday’s council meeting, and I was on medication for a suspected ulcer, I checked myself into emergency at Shuswap Lake General Hospital,” he said.

He added that the next morning his life was completely changed.

“I was informed by the attending physician that I did not have an ulcer, but I have tumours on my pancreas, liver and lungs,” he said. “I have been advised that it is likely cancer and that it is possibly inoperable.”

“I have no idea what lays ahead as I stubbornly fight this battle,” Flynn said.

The councillor said he is not planning to take a leave of absence despite the health challenge.

Mayor Alan Harrison pledged the full support of city hall and the community.

“We are going to support you,” said Harrison.

“We are right behind you. All of us at this table, and within this building and community,” he said. “We’re behind you.”

Flynn said it has been a pleasure serving Salmon Arm for two decades, calling it “been an absolute pleasure and a big part of the joy” in his life.
