Salmon Arm RCMP dismiss social media rumours of school threat

Salmon Arm RCMP said there was no credible threat to Salmon Arm Secondary School after rumours circulated on social media alleging a student planned to bring a firearm to the school.

Police said officers became aware of the posts on May 4 and immediately launched an investigation with School District 83 officials. Investigators determined no threats had been made against the school.

“The reports were based on social media posts that someone decided to interpret as a possible threat,” said Cpl. Brett Urano of the B.C. RCMP. “There was never any threat to the school, and at no time were students or staff in danger.”

According to police, the concern stemmed from a video showing a teenager discharging an airsoft pistol. RCMP said the video was reviewed and the item involved was confirmed to be an airsoft pistol, not a firearm.

Police continue to review the circumstances surrounding the incident and are asking anyone with information to contact Salmon Arm RCMP.
