Air quality warning issued for Salmon Arm

Environment Canada has issued an orange air quality warning for Salmon Arm, meaning impact levels are high.

Officials said residents and visitors can expect heavy, widespread smoke over the next few days.

Exposure to high smoke levels can pose threat to health regardless of age of health status. Officials encouraged residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activities until the warning has ended and to keep inside air as clean as possible.

Environment Canada said to use a clean, good quality air filter in ventilation systems.

Mild irritation and discomfort such as eye, nose and throat irritation, phlegm production, runny nose, headaches or mild cough are common and usually disappear when the smoke clears.

Officials added that more serious but less common symptoms include wheezing, chest pains or severe cough. People with asthma or other chronic illness should follow any personal care plans designed with their family physicians.

The next update will be available tomorrow, July 9, and made available on the Province’s Air Quality Warnings webpage.
