Recovery efforts continue for man presumed drowned in Mara Lake

Police are continuing recovery efforts for a man presumed drowned after he disappeared while boating on Mara Lake.

Sicamous RCMP said the man was reported missing at 8:13 p.m. on July 10 after friends on a boat realized one member of their group was unaccounted for.

Officers, assisted by search-and-rescue crews, searched the lake and shoreline Friday night and continued operations Saturday. The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team later assessed conditions and worked with search crews to develop a recovery plan.

On Sunday, the underwater recovery team conducted sonar searches but was unable to locate the man because of the size of the search area.

Police said recovery efforts are scheduled to resume Tuesday using towed sonar technology to expand the search.

“We would like to thank Search and Rescue volunteers and all partner agencies involved for their continued dedication and support throughout this operation. Our thoughts are with the missing man’s family and friends during this difficult time,” said Sgt. Murrey McNeil, Sicamous RCMP detachment commander.
