Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for Salmon Arm and surrounding areas as temperatures are forecast to reach the mid- to high-30s today and Thursday.
The warning is at the “yellow” level, indicating a moderate impact. Environment Canada said humidex values could approach the high 30s Thursday across the Shuswap as a southerly flow brings more moisture into the area, increasing humidity.
Environment Canada said the risks are greater for seniors, people who live alone, those with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease or respiratory disease, people with mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression or anxiety, people with substance use disorders and those with limited mobility.
The agency said anyone can be affected by extreme heat and urged people to watch for signs of heat exhaustion, including fatigue, feeling unwell, thirst, headache and unusually dark urine.
Residents and visitors are advised to stay in cool environments and drink plenty of water.
Environment Canada also urged the public never to leave vulnerable people, children or pets inside a parked vehicle.
The forecast calls for a high of 34 C on Thursday, July 16.
