Suspect arrested following bush fire in Salmon Arm

A suspect has been arrested after a bush fire that police believe was deliberately set in Salmon Arm over the weekend.

Salmon Arm RCMP responded to a report of a fire in the 300 block of the Trans-Canada Highway SW at about 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 8.

Police said officers arrived to find brush engulfed in flames, threatening a nearby business.

Officers and members of the public worked to contain the fire until it was extinguished, police said.

Police said the fire damaged nearby bushes and trees. No injuries were reported.

“Thanks to the quick actions of responding officers and community members, the fire was extinguished before it could spread to nearby buildings,” Sgt. Simon Scott of the Salmon Arm RCMP said. “The investigation remains ongoing and we continue to seek additional witnesses.”

Police said their investigation determined the fire appeared to have been deliberately set. Officers identified a suspect believed to be responsible and arrested the person the following day.

Police asked anyone with information who has not spoken with investigators to contact Salmon Arm RCMP at 250-832-6044.
