Salmon Arm renews downtown improvement funding

The City of Salmon Arm is renewing its downtown business improvement area for another seven years.

Bylaw No. 4746 will renew the Downtown Salmon Arm Business Improvement Area from Jan. 1, 2027, to Dec. 31, 2033.

In an online announcement, the city said the business improvement area provides funding to the Salmon Arm Downtown Improvement Association to support initiatives aimed at strengthening and enhancing the downtown business area.

Funding can be used for activities including downtown beautification, graffiti removal and studies and reports related to the business area, as well as initiatives that support and encourage downtown businesses.

The city said the funding is not collected through general taxation. Instead, it comes from an annual levy on eligible downtown commercial properties.

Under the renewed bylaw, the maximum annual grant will start at $254,460 in 2027 and gradually increase to $328,166 in 2033.

The association must also submit an annual budget and report to council on how the money is spent.
