Local concert raises funs for wildfire relief

Local musicians and community organizations are aiming to raise money for people displaced by the Bradley Creek and Bald Range wildfires.

Community in Concert: A Wildfire Benefit takes place Friday, Aug. 21, at The Nexus at First. Proceeds from the event will support wildfire evacuees through the Naramata Centre and a wildfire relief fund administered by the North Okanagan Community Foundation.

The benefit came together quickly after several members of First Community began discussing what they could do to help neighbours affected by the wildfires, organizers said.

The idea grew to involve other organizations, including the Salmon Arm Jazz Club and Voice of the Shuswap, as well as individual musicians.

Organizers said the initiative grew out of a desire to help.

“As the conversations continued, more people stepped forward and offered what they could.”

Performers include First Singers and Friends, musical director Jean MacLennan, Liisa Befus, Dave Simmons, Andréa Bajová, Ben MacRae and Skye Eriksen, Jake McIntyre-Paul, Callum Orchard, Liam Nadurak, Emilie Bradford, Strauss Whiteside and Andrea Anderson.

Organizers said music provides an opportunity for people in the Shuswap to come together, enjoy an evening of entertainment and support evacuees.

Doors open at 7 p.m., with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Admission is by donation. Cash, cheque, credit card and online donation options are available.
