One person deceased following collision in Sicamous

One person has died following a two-vehicle collision on Highway 1 east of Sicamous.

Sicamous RCMP responded to the collision near Arnold Frontage Road shortly after 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Police said a westbound SUV crossed the centre line on an undivided, two-lane section of the highway and entered the path of an eastbound sedan. The vehicles collided at highway speeds.

The driver and lone occupant of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and lone occupant of the SUV was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP said road conditions were excellent at the time, with no precipitation and good visibility.

An RCMP collision analyst attended the scene to assist with the investigation.

Police said alcohol has been ruled out as a factor.

Highway 1 was closed for about eight and a half hours while investigators processed the scene. A detour was available for passenger vehicles on Solsqua-Sicamous Road, while commercial traffic had to wait for the highway to reopen.

Eagle Valley Rescue, the Sicamous Fire Department, BC Ambulance, AIM highway maintenance and the Ministry of Transportation assisted police at the scene.
