Salmon Arm Mayor not to pleased with provincial snap election

Salmon Arm Mayor Alan Harrison said he was not too happy when Premier David Eby called a snap election.

Harrison is running for his third term as the City’s mayor and said there are a number of projects that he would like to see through.

He told Vista News that it was no surprise to him that Eby would call an election. He and his fellow mayors voted unanimously at this year’s UBCM to postpone a provincial election, as it could take the focus away for voters.

“The response was, ‘We can call an election when we would like, and we think the time is now, and so we are going to call it.'”

Harrison added that the snap election during the local election is uncalled for.

“I think it’s quite disrespectful,” he said. “Having said that, voters in Salmon Arm are pretty smart, and I think that they can differentiate.”

He said he feels that residents will still come out and vote.

“I have faith in the voters in Salmon Arm, but yeah, I say that provincial election is totally uncalled for.”

Harrison plans to attend the 2026 Election Open House next week on Oct. 6 at the Salmon Arm Recreation Centre, saying the new format of the event will be no different than what he experiences everyday.

“People come and talk to me on the street and the grocery store and talk to me about things that concern then or thing that they want to add to and I totally respect that.”

Harrison encouraged everyone to vote. Advanced polling takes place on Oct. 7 and Oct. 13 at Fifth Avenue Seniors Activity Centre.
