The Sicamous RCMP are reminding residents and visitors that electronic dirt bikes are not legal to operate on roadways or in public areas, after police see an increase in e-dirt bikes on public roadways.
These vehicles are not covered by ICBC under any insurance policy for operation on public roads, and anyone found riding an e-dirt bike in prohibited areas will be fined $598.
Meanwhile, electronic bicycles are legal for use on public streets.
The Sicamous RCMP want people to know the difference between the two vehicles:
- E-bikes are limited to 32km/h, whereas E-dirt bikes can travel up to 75-100km/h.
- E-bikes must have pedals. E-dirt bikes do no have pedals.
- E-bikes must not exceed 500 Watts of power, whereas e-dirt bikes output in the range of 8000 – 22,000 Watts.
Both e-dirt bikes and traditional gas-powered dirt bikes are strictly for off road use and are not permitted to be operated on roads, sidewalks, bike paths or any public space.
