A fire has been contained at the Salmon Arm landfill, after emergency services responded to flames in the metal recycling area today, Aug. 25.
According to the CSRD, preliminary information indicates the metal recycling contractor was bailing the scrap metal for removal from the site when an explosion occurred, causing a fire in the machine.
It is likely that an improperly disposed lithium-ion battery was the cause, however, this is still under investigation.
The Salmon Arm Fire Department remained onsite for continuous monitoring today.
The CSRD is reminding residents that disposing batteries correctly is essential, and should never be disposed of in regular garbage or recycling.
Batteries can be dropped off separately at all CSRD landfills.
Residents can find out the closest drop-off location by using Recycle BC’s website Recyclepedia tool.
