Who is the Sicamous Fire Captain? Meet Steve Norton

The District of Sicamous has announced the new captain of Sicamous Fire Rescue and shared details about the firefighter stepping into the leadership role.

Steven Norton joined Sicamous Fire Rescue two years ago but brings nearly two decades of experience to the position. Before joining the department, he served with three fire departments in B.C. and Alberta.

Norton said mental strength is essential for firefighters.

“Firefighters must have strong integrity, exceptional teamwork and a high standard of physical and mental fitness, all while being empathetic and putting others before yourself,” he shared with the District of Sicamous. “Of course, being an adrenaline junkie doesn’t hurt as well.”

He said he is committed to protecting life, safety, property and the environment and believes his role as captain will allow him to help educate the community about staying safe.

“Although the fire department responds to situations where people may be vulnerable or scared, Sicamous has proven time and time again that when something threatens one of our own, or in some cases the whole community, we always rally together to pull through,” Norton added. “It’s times like those when I am so proud to be a member of a small, strong and resilient community.”

The district said Norton recognizes the importance of mentorship and is excited to pass on his knowledge to aspiring firefighters.

“Eighty-five per cent of Canada is protected by volunteer firefighters, which makes us part of the largest family in our country and the world,” Norton said. “We work together as a well-oiled machine to provide an outstanding service to our residents.”

Norton told the district he appreciates the support and respect firefighters receive from Sicamous residents. When he is not firefighting, he works as a maintenance supervisor for Twin Anchors Houseboats. He said he enjoys lake life with his family as well as playing hockey, hunting and fishing.
