Sicamous and Enderby in red zone for avalanche risk

Avalanche Canada has issued a warning for Sicamous and Enderby, B.C., placing the areas in a “red zone” for avalanche risk, meaning there is a high danger of avalanches.

The warning, issued March 18, said avalanches will be large and may run full path today and Friday. On Saturday, March 21, the risk level is expected to decrease to an “orange zone,” meaning the danger is considerable.

Avalanche Canada advises people to avoid exposure to overhead avalanche terrain during periods of heavy loading from new snow, wind or rain. The agency also said people should be aware of the potential for large avalanches due to buried weak layers and avoid travelling on slopes below cornices.
