Police destroy replica firearm in Salmon Arm

Salmon Arm RCMP responded to a report of a man near the Salvation Army Lighthouse in possession of a handgun.

Police located a man matching the description seated on the sidewalk. He was immediately detained and searched for possession of a weapon. Officers found a replica .44 Magnum air gun in the man’s waistband.

The man was released without charge. The air gun was seized and destroyed.

RCMP reminded the public that replica firearms, including airsoft, pellet, BB or toy guns designed to resemble real firearms, may result in seizure, criminal charges or other enforcement action depending on the circumstances.

“Replica firearms look real, and officers have no way of knowing otherwise when responding to a firearm report. Adults, youth and their parents need to understand that carrying or displaying these items in public can quickly escalate into a dangerous situation. Anyone with questions is encouraged to contact their local police detachment,” Const. Andrew Hodges, spokesperson for Salmon Arm RCMP, said.

He added public awareness and early education are key to preventing tragic outcomes.
