The recently announced roundabout at 30 Street NE and 11 Avenue NE in Salmon Arm has prompted questions and concerns.
The City of Salmon Arm addressed why it decided to build a roundabout. In an online update, the city said the intersection is the highest crash location in the city outside of highways, according to ICBC.
The city said roundabouts reduce both the number and severity of crashes because they slow drivers, eliminate dangerous crossing traffic and keep vehicles moving in a predictable direction.
“The design naturally slows vehicles down, which means fewer crashes and less severe injuries if one does occur,” said the update.
The city added the roundabout is safer for pedestrians and cyclists because crossing distances are shorter and slower traffic allows people to cross more safely.
