Large diesel spill affecting Scotch Creek Private Well

Interior Health is advising private well users in Scotch Creek to take precautions following a large diesel spill at a local gas station on May 5 at about 7:30 p.m.

The health authority said people who rely on private wells for drinking water should monitor their water for possible impacts.

Diesel fuel has a distinct odour and can be detected at very low concentrations in drinking water, Interior Health said.

The advisory applies to dwellings south of and including Butters Road, Saratoga Road and Kenwood Gate.

Interior Health said residents who notice a foul odour or visible fuel in their water should use an alternate water source for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, food preparation and bathing.

The health authority said the advisory is a precautionary measure affecting more than 200 private well users in the area, based on current information.

Officials are monitoring the situation in consultation with the Ministry of Environment and Parks.
