Sicamous RCMP said it was “extremely fortunate” no one was killed or seriously injured after a semi-truck struck a parked pickup and fifth-wheel trailer on Highway 1 near Malakwa.
Police responded to the west end of the four-lane section of Highway 1 shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Officers found a fifth-wheel trailer destroyed and torn open on the shoulder of the highway, while the pickup towing it was also heavily damaged.
Police said the pickup and trailer had been parked off the travelled portion of the highway because of a mechanical problem with the pickup.
Investigators determined a westbound semi-truck veered off the highway and struck the parked pickup and trailer at highway speed.
Police said alcohol was not a factor in the collision, though investigators suspect inattentive driving by the semi-truck driver.
Two occupants of the pickup were uninjured. A person who was inside the RV trailer at the time suffered injuries believed to be non-serious.
The semi-truck driver was also not seriously injured.
The highway was closed while paramedics, including a BC Emergency Health Services air ambulance crew, attended the scene.
Sicamous RCMP and B.C. Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement continue to investigate.
