Motorists reminded of new roundabout along 30th Street in Salmon Arm

The City of Salmon Arm is reminding drivers to safely navigate the city’s newest roundabout at 30th Street NE and 11 Avenue NE.

On social media, the City shared reminders to help the public with roundabout safety, and the new intersection is complete and operational.

Officials advised drivers to watch for pedestrians and cyclists.

“Slow down and watch for pedestrians and cyclists at designated crossings when entering and exiting the roundabout,” the post said.

Commuters need to look left and yield. Before entering, make sure to look left and yield to traffic already circulating in the roundabout, the city advised. Before reaching the desired exit, use the right turn signal.

Construction began in early may and continued through September. The new was designed to improve traffic flow, safety and long-term reliability in the area.

The City of Salmon Arm addressed why it decided to build a roundabout. In an online update, the city said the intersection is the highest crash location in the city outside of highways, according to ICBC.

The city added roundabouts reduce both the number and severity of crashes because they slow drivers, eliminate dangerous crossing traffic and keep vehicles moving in a predictable direction.
