The Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is continuing their push for mosquito control using drone technology, hoping to get certification from the province.
CSRD board members talked about mitigating mosquito control using drones with the intention of receiving approval from the Southern Interior Local Government Association (SILGA).
Because there is no certification process at the provincial level for using drones for pest control, mosquito control is done with ground spraying methods with helicopters, hence, the push for creating provincial certification for pesticide application using drones.
The CSRD does partake in an annual mosquito control program in Revelstoke, Golden and the North Shuswap.
“A pro-active control program concentrates efforts on the physical and biological control of larvae before they become a nuisance. The most permanent prevention of adult mosquito annoyance is through the physical reduction of the problem, at the source,” the CSRD stated on their control program.
Despite some pushback, the board voted in favour of sending their resolution to SILGA, the Town of Golden and the Association of Kootenay and Boundary Local Governments (AKBLG) for additional support.
