Young woman dies following fatal collision on Highway 97A

A 22-year-old Salmon Arm woman has died after a collision with a semi-truck on Highway 97A closed the highway for several hours.

At 8:40 a.m., Sicamous RCMP responded to a collision near Hummingbird Resort between a Ford sedan and a semi-truck. Police said the sedan was travelling southbound and lost control after a curve.

“The vehicle then crossed the Centrex line and into the path of a northbound semi truck and trailer which resulted in a heavy collision between the two vehicles in the northbound lane,” Sgt. Murray McNeil of the Sicamous RCMP said.

Police said ambulances arrived at the scene and the woman was declared dead by an off-duty physician who had stopped to offer assistance.

“Road conditions were slippery with heavy snow falling and the roadway covered with a thin layer of wet snow,” McNeil added.

The highway was closed until 3 p.m. Traffic on the Bruhn Bridge was also stopped for the day to allow Highway 1 to remain open.

No one else was injured in the collision, police said.
