Two bald eagles have built nests along the Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail project south of Farmers Bridge.
The Splatsin Development Corp.’s Yucwmenlúcwu (Caretakers of the Land) environmental planning and management division said crews are monitoring the pair’s activity while construction continues in the area.
Officials said the monitoring is intended to ensure the birds are not disturbed as work progresses on the trail.
“As work continues on the Rail Trail project, including the operation of heavy machinery such as an excavator, our environmental team has been carefully observing eagle activity to ensure construction activities do not cause significant disturbance,” read the Splatsin update.
Splatsin said their monitoring helps protect the nesting pair and reduces the risk of nest abandonment.
Herb Tepper, environment manager with Caretakers of the Land LLP said their responsibility is to ensure that development and environmental protection go hand in hand.
“By closely monitoring the eagles during construction, we can help safeguard their nesting area while allowing important community infrastructure work to continue responsibly,” he said.
