Salmon Arm RCMP officers are expected to begin wearing body cameras by the end of November as the detachment prepares for several equipment and uniform changes.
Sgt. Simon Scott outlined the changes in the detachment’s quarterly report to Salmon Arm city council, noting officers will undergo training in November before the cameras are introduced.
Officials will release more information about the cameras in the near future. In addition, the RCMP will be transitioning to a new firearm, the Glock 45.
Training is already underway, with some officers carrying the new weapon. All Salmon Arm RCMP members are expected to be trained and equipped with the firearm by the middle of 2027.
Officers will also be switching to blue uniform shirts, although the transition is expected to take some time.
“Again, it will take some time to get everyone the new shirts,” the report read. “The first shipments should be arriving soon.”
The report also highlighted crime trends and policing activity between July and September 2026.
Sexual offences, break and enters, theft from motor vehicles and impaired driving investigations trended upwards. Assaults, auto theft, motor vehicle collisions and impaired driving (12 hour and 24 hour suspensions) have trended downwards.
The RCMP’s files involving negative impact with youth and mental health related files have increased. The files involving alcohol and drugs, and domestic violence files have all decreased this quarter.
Salmon Arm members had 527 documented traffic stops in this quarter. BC Highway Patrol members have also documented 170 traffic stops this period in the Salmon Arm Detachment area.
Police also reported 23 motor vehicle collisions involving damage exceeding $10,000 or injuries within city limits.
No fatal collisions were reported in the city during the quarter, although two occurred in the surrounding provincial policing area.
