Woman loses $500 following Facebook Marketplace transaction

Salmon Arm RCMP are reminding residents that e-transfers should only be used with trusted people following an incident in which a woman lost $500.

A woman reported she was selling an item on Facebook Marketplace and received an e-transfer as payment.

Police said the woman clicked the link and immediately knew something was wrong.

The next day, the woman’s bank account showed three unauthorized transactions totalling just under $500.

Police said she contacted her bank and had her account locked to prevent further losses.

“Do not send e-transfers to unknown people unless it is money you are willing to potentially lose,” Const. Andrew Hodges of the Salmon Arm RCMP said in a statement.

He added that cash is strongly recommended for online marketplace purchases.
