Salmon Arm updates park rules, signage for dog owners

The City of Salmon Arm has updated its park rules and signage to clarify where dogs are permitted on leash or off leash.

In an update, the city said the changes are intended to make park rules easier to understand and provide more consistent information for dog owners.

Dogs are permitted on leash at Blackburn, Jackson, Peter Jannink, Klahani, McGuire and Marine Peace parks, as well as the Foreshore Trail, Mount Ida Cemetery and Shuswap Memorial Cemetery.

The city said there are no changes to designated off-leash areas or natural and undeveloped parks where dogs are permitted off leash, including South Canoe, Little Mountain, Coyote and Park Hill.

“Owners must carry a leash and keep their dog under control,” the update said.

Canoe Beach also has a designated off-leash dog area at the east end of the park.

Dogs are not permitted on sports fields or within six metres of playgrounds and water parks. Canoe Beach and Fletcher Park are also dog-free except for designated on-leash routes through the parks.

The city said dog owners may see new signage at parks as a reminder of the rules.
