New section of the Shuswap/North Okanagan Rail opens

A new 14-kilometre section of the Splatsin te Secwépemc/Shuswap North Okanagan Rail Trail has opened as construction continues.

The section between the Rosemond Lake Bridge and Grindrod is now open to the public, along with an additional parking lot in Mara.

The Columbia Shuswap Regional District announced that about 32 kilometres of the trail are now open across three disconnected segments.

Officials said the section between Grindrod and Enderby remains closed while construction continues. However, it is expected to open soon. The CSRD said work includes completing road crossings, installing signage and carrying out environmental mitigation.

Trail users are reminded that the northern area in Sicamous near the Bruhn Bridge remains an active construction zone. The sidewalk on the existing bridge is closed until the new bridge is completed and traffic is shifted to the new structure, which is expected sometime in 2027.

The CSRD said funding is in place to complete most of the trail by the end of 2026, but the final 6.5-kilometre section still depends on additional funding approvals. Until construction is finished, trail users should expect closures, detours and changing access conditions. Visitors are encouraged to check for updates before using the trail.

Visitors are reminded that dogs must remain on leash and stay on the trail.

The CSRD is inviting the public to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony planned for July 27 at the Mara Trailhead.
