Increased popularity at Blackburn park sparks discussion of all-year bathroom access

The new synthetic field at Blackburn Park has drawn enough use to catch the attention of Salmon Arm city council, which is considering year-round access to public washrooms.

At the Feb. 23 council meeting, mayor Alan Harrison noted how the field has been used every month.

“Maybe it was an unusual winter … which is wonderful, wonderful problem to have.”

Manager of Roads and Parks Darin Gerow suggested several options to keep the washrooms open, especially given the field’s increased use. The washrooms close during the colder months and reopen in the spring, Gerow said.

He noted a significant risk of freezing which could cause pipe damage if the water supply remains during the winter months. Therefore, he recommended alternatives from low to high costs.

The options include renting portable toilets, buying a self-contained washroom or upgrading the existing facilities by installing a heating system.

Gerow and Harrison said they liked the idea of upgrading the washrooms. No final decision has been made. Council will consider the issue further before choosing an option.

With spring approaching, Harrison recommended staff return in early September with funding options.
